Alan's Awesome Adventure - Day 7

Sunday 28th June 1998 - Tour of Los Angeles

A hazy Downtown LA as seen from the Holiday Inn in Holywood. Early (8:30) on Sunday morning I boarded the courtesy coach for the L.A. Tours morning tour of the sights of Los Angeles. With only two days to see everything in LA, I had decided this was the best method to catch as much of the city as possible. The tour host knows all the popular sights, and gives a fully narrated tour.

A stack of 45's (Capitol Records) The morning tour was billed as "City and Movie Star houses" and as our tour host informed us, Sunday is the ideal day to take the tour as traffic is very light, allowing plenty of time for sightseeing and even some extra excursions which are not normally included in the weekday tour. If you are really lucky you may get to hear of, or even see some of the "alternate" attractions such as Hugh Grant Avenue (the street where that incident occured), OJ Boulevard, or the George Micheal Public Toilets.

One of the strange things about downtown Los Angeles is that many buildings have a familiar, almost deja-vu look.  When Hollywood is making a movie, and the producer wishes a city-scape background, or even needs a building to be prominently featured in the film, then downtown LA is where they come. The building that Arnie blew up in a Terminator movie may, in real life, be the corporate headquarters of a bank, and the one which was destroyed by aliens in Independance Day may be nothing more than an insurance company. Anyone for an alien landing party? (from Independance Day)

A journey in LA is not complete without a cruise down Sunset Boulevard, and a stroll along Rodeo Drive. So many plush shops displaying their wares with no price tag. Needless to say, if you have to ask the price you can't afford it.

Zip code 90210 And finally, into Beverly Hills and Bel-Air, homes of the rich and famous. Interesting to note there are no pavements (sidewalks) as pedestrians are not permitted. To cut down on stalkers and intrusive fans, any person found walking is liable to be arrested by the private security patrols.

Santa Monica Beach The afternoon tours takes in Marina Del-Rey, Venice Beach and Santa Monica Beach. Thousands of city dwellers make the journey to hang out and be cool. Keep an eye out for those roller bladers and skateboarders as you watch the many  performers and entertainers.

Santa Monica Peir

Although the Californians don't make as much out of it as in Arizona, Route 66 terminates on Santa Monica peir, at the end of its 2448 mile journey from Chicago.

This tour also includes over an hour to spend in Santa Monica's 3rd Boulevard, a shopping centre of epic proportions.
